Excitement and anticipation were the overwhelming mood at the first AC Grand Rapids Supporters Meet-Up on Tuesday night at Küsterer Brauhaus on the West Side.
Nearly 200 people joined the party to celebrate one year until ACGR kicks off and hear ACGR President Darrius Barnes give updates on the club.
“I know what this sport can do for communities and how it can bring people together,” Barnes shared with the crowd. “And that’s what we’re looking to do at AC Grand Rapids — integrate into this community and connect all walks of life. this community is literally for all. It’s for everyone…And we want you all to come along on that journey with us.
“[AC Grand Rapids] is going to be fan-led. It’s going to be supporter-led. The club is a pillar and an anchor here to help guide that.”
As he finished his remarks, Barnes transformed from sports executive to supporter “capo,” leading the room in a loud and energetic call-and-response with the fans shouting “A-C” and “G-R” as if they in the stadium already.
After the noise died down, fans communed with fellow soccer supporters and watched the US Men’s National Team’s friendly against Portugal. While the result did not go the Americans’ way, the night certainly helped build momentum for the soccer movement in Grand Rapids.
New Amway Stadium Logo
Fans also got a first look at the new Amway Stadium logo, which was unveiled by Legends at a pre-event gathering that also included an ACGR swag bag raffle and a soccer gear donation initiative.
